Attendance Policies

GENERAL ATTENDANCE POLICY K-5

The Education Law requires that the students enrolled in the schools of this District attend school on every school day unless legally excused. The educational program offered by this District is predicated upon the presence of the student and requires continuity of instruction and classroom participation. The regular contact of students with one another in the classroom and their participation in a well planned instructional activity under the tutelage of a competent teacher are vital to this purpose. Absences other than legal absences as defined by State regulations have a highly adverse effect on the student as well as the entire educational program. Therefore, the Board of Education urges all parents to make every effort for their children to be in attendance.

SECONDARY ATTENDANCE POLICY 6-12

To earn credit for a course, a student must maintain active student status. To maintain active student status a student must be present approximately 90% of the days that a class is in session.

INACTIVE STATUS STUDENTS

When a student has been declared inactive in a course, he/she may not complete the course of study and will not be able to earn credit for the course.

The student will be allowed to audit the class but will not be allowed to take the final exam or be allowed any other means for obtaining a grade in the course for that academic year.

Students must meet all requirements of Cleveland Hill High School in order to receive a Regents diploma.

If the student becomes a discipline problem, the student will be removed from the course. A student may, with parental consent and concurrence of the teacher, guidance counselor and principal, be assigned to a study hall rather than continue to audit the course.

IMPLEMENTATION DEFINITIONS

1. Absence from class: Absences include all legal and illegal absences such as illness, field trips, music lessons, class cuts and lates to class.

2. Home instruction: All students who are enrolled in a school-approved home teaching program will be considered in attendance for an attendance appeal.

All students who are absent, due to illness, for an extended period of time, may be eligible for home instruction.

3. Courses affected: This policy will be in effect for all Regents and School certified courses.

4. Ninety percent rule: The school year varies in length from 185-190 days. To implement the 90% rule the following guidelines will be used to maintain active status:

            • no more than 20 times from a full-year course.

            • no more than 10 times from a half-year course.

Additional Information: A student’s attendance will be recorded and counted from the day he has officially entered the class and it will be pro-rated accordingly.

A tardiness of 10 minutes or longer will be counted as an absence from class.
