Individual Counseling Mrs. Balthasar, Ms. LaPatra, and Mrs. Hillyard conduct individual and crisis counseling on as needed basis. For more intensive and therapeutic counseling, we can provide referral information for counseling agencies in the community. Please also refer to the file attached below called "Counseling Agencies in the Community". Small Group Counseling Throughout the year, Mrs. Balthasar, Ms. LatPatra, and Mrs. Hillyard run small groups to address certain counseling needs: 1. Split Club is a middle school version of the Banana Splits program, a student support group for children of divorce, step-families, single-parent families, or alternative family situations. This group addresses the difficulties of having a divided life between two separate households, feeling caught in the middle of parent disputes, understanding court and custody issues, the sudden changes that occur when a parent remarries or has children, or other challenging family issues. It meets once a week for 8 weeks. Students are referred by teachers or parents, or they can refer themselves. For more information, please contact Mrs. Balthasar at 836-7200 x8446. 2. FOCUS Group (Finding Outstanding Conflict Resolution Strategies) is a middle school counseling group that helps students learn to resolve conflicts peacefully, learn anger management techniques, address respect issues and getting along with others, promote positive decision making, and develop leadership skills. It meets once a week for 8 weeks. Students are referred by teachers or parents, or they can refer themselves. For more information, please contact Mrs. Balthasar at 836-7200 x8446. 3. Lunch Bunch is an informal lunch group for 6th and 7th grade boys and girls. Students eat lunch together once a week for peer bonding, develop friendship skills, and improve social relations. Girls Group is for middle school girls to address peer issues, social skills, health and wellness, and promote positive attitudes. Classroom Counseling Presentations Mrs. Balthasar, Ms. LaPatra, and Mrs. Hillyard frequently visit classrooms to conduct presentations on a variety of counseling topics: Bullying and Violence Prevention Rumor Spreading Diversity Issues Sexual Harassment Peer Relationships & Social Skills Career Exploration Self-Esteem Character Education/Respect for Others Decision Making Health & Wellness
